The North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) is not ready to confront Russia in case of an attack on the organization’s position on the Eastern flank. This is with reference to a secret report of the Alliance, intended for internal use, reports Der Spiegel.
As the reasons cited are the logistical capabilities of NATO, which will not allow to react to a potential threat and make an operational movement of troops. It is noted that the logistic system of the Alliance atrophied since the end of the cold war.
For example, NATO forces do not have enough trailers and trains, capable of transporting tanks. The report also contains information about the insufficient number of bridges, which carry super-heavy weapons.
NATO spokesman Oana Lungescu declined to comment on this information, but noted that negotiations are underway for modernizing the management structures of the Alliance.
In may, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the Alliance strengthen its defense is “a response to Russia’s actions”. However, he noted that the organization “strives for a better and more constructive relationship with Russia.” Stoltenberg said that NATO confirmed its approach in relations with Moscow — the “strong defense, along with meaningful dialogue.”
Relations between Russia and NATO is seriously complicated in the spring and summer of 2014, after the annexation of Crimea to Russia and accused Moscow of meddling in the conflict in Eastern Ukraine.
