UN, October 12. /TASS/. Increasing U.S. capabilities of the system PRO to gain a strategic advantage due to the possibility to use nuclear weapons “with minimal cost”. This was stated on Thursday by the representative of the Ministry of defense of Russia, Alexander Emelyanov in the course of Russian-Chinese briefing on missile defense on the sidelines of the first Committee of the UN General Assembly.
According to him, the deployment of United States global missile defence consistently destroys the existing system of international security.
“Increasing ballistic missile capabilities, the United States seeks to obtain a strategic advantage through the creation of conditions for the use of nuclear weapons with minimal costs. This can lead to serious consequences in the security sphere,” said Emelyanov.
He stressed that, “first, the presence of a global missile defense system lowers the threshold of use of nuclear weapons, as it creates the illusion of impunity the sudden application of strategic offensive weapons under the “umbrella of missile defense.”
In addition, he added Emelyanov, ABOUT the United States jeopardizes the implementation of the Treaty on the reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms from 2010 and the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate and shorter-range missiles 1987.
“Third, the new missile defense system represents a threat to the safety of international space activities, hindered the achievement of agreements on the prevention of placement of weapons in outer space. Fourth, ABOUT is an incentive for capacity building of missile systems in the world, and thus provoke a new arms race”, – said the representative of the Ministry of defense.
