New types of “smiling” of spiders was named in honor of Michelle Obama and Leonardo DiCaprio

Scientists from the University of Vermont has opened 15 new types of “smiling” spiders and called them after famous politicians and actors, among them Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Leonardo DiCaprio and Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders. Details can be found in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.

Scientists have discovered a new species of spiders that live in areas of Jamaica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, lesser Antilles, Florida, South Carolina, Costa Rica, Mexico and Colombia.

Spiders of the genus Spintharus scientists named Spintharus barackobamai, S. michelleobamaae, berniesandersi S. and S. and S. davidbowiei leonardodicaprioi.

“It was a student research project. Calling spiders in honor of these people, students and supervisors would like to Express my respect for the celebrities who came to the defense of human rights, was aware of the problem of climate change,” — said the study’s author Ingi Agnarsson.

One of the participants of the study named the spider after his favorite actor Leonardo DiCaprio. “I liked this actor since middle school, but now that he was not indifferent to environmental issues, I loved it even more. Hope he finds out about our study and chat with me about climate change,” admitted study co-author Chloe van Patten.

The Caribbean is home to many endemic to these regions of beings. Scientists plans to take steps to preserve the unique biodiversity.
