Died Opera singer Zurab Sotkilava

MOSCOW, September 18. /TASS/. Opera singer, people’s artist of USSR Zurab Sotkilava, died Monday in Moscow at the age of 80 years. TASS said General Director of Bolshoi theatre Vladimir urin.

“Died Zurab Lavrentievich Sotkilava, a great actor of the Bolshoi theatre. He had a severe illness which he fought until the end,” said urin.

About the time of farewell and funeral will be announced later.

Soviet, Georgian and Russian Opera singer Zurab Sotkilava was born on March 12, 1937, in Sukhumi, he graduated from mining and Geology Department of the Tbilisi Polytechnic Institute, and then enrolled in the Tbilisi Conservatory.

Career of the singer began in Tbilisi at the Georgian theater of Opera and ballet. Paliashvili, then Sotkilava trained at Milan’s La Scala. In the 1960 — 1970s Sotkilava has won several international competitions. In 1973, the artist made his debut at the Bolshoi theatre in Bizet’s Opera “Carmen”, after which he was to take the troupe and soon became a leading soloist.
