Putin sent Sergei Shoigu to Damascus

The Minister of defence of Russia Sergey Shoigu held talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

As explained in the defense Ministry, General of the army Tuesday, September 12, made a working visit to Damascus on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The parties discussed issues of military and military-technical cooperation “in the context of the successful actions of Syrian government forces with the support of the Russian space forces to complete the destruction of the terrorist group ISIS (banned in Russia) in Syria”, said the Minister. The conversation also touched upon the topic of stabilization of the situation in the middle East state, functioning zones of de-escalation and humanitarian assistance to the population.

August 13, Sergei Shoigu said that the armed Syrian opposition got their own to deal with the terrorists trapped inside areas of de-escalation.

On 26 July the President of Russia Vladimir Putin signed the law on ratification of the Protocol to the agreement between Moscow and Damascus on the placement of the aviation group of the Russian Armed forces on the territory of Syria. According to the document, the agreement will be valid for 49 years. This provides for its automatic renewal for further periods of 25 years if neither party timely notified of the intention to terminate the agreement.

Armed conflict in Syria began in spring 2011. According to the UN, the victims were more than 220 thousand people.
