Leaders of the BRICS countries condemned the nuclear test in North Korea

The BRICS leaders issued a strong condemnation of the nuclear test in North Korea. This is stated in the Declaration adopted following the meeting. The text of the document posted on the website Kremlin.ru.

“We Express our deep concern at the renewed tensions over the continued for a long time the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and emphasize that it can be resolved only by peaceful means and through direct dialogue of all interested parties”,— stated in the Declaration.

North Korea announced the successful test of a hydrogen bomb on the morning of 3 September. The DPRK stated that we are talking about the payload that can be used to equip Intercontinental ballistic missiles. South Korean military estimated the explosive power of 50 kilotons.

On the same day the Pentagon chief James Mattis said that the U.S. armed forces are ready to give “effective and overwhelming military response” in case of threat from North Korea to American territories or allies of Washington. In turn, the President of the United States Donald trump in a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe confirmed the readiness to apply against the DPRK’s nuclear weapons.

The summit of leaders of the BRICS countries (Russia, China, Brazil, India and South Africa) in South China’s Xiamen city held on 4-5 September.
