The Minister of economic cooperation with Russia Hiroshige Seko said that the alignment of favorable economic relations between Russia and Japan will help to create preconditions for the solution of the territorial dispute on the Kuril Islands, according to Financial Times.

“We want to build mutually beneficial relations with Russia, which did not dwell on the issue of the Northern territories (Kuril Islands. — RNS)and to implement profitable for Japan’s economic projects”, — said the Minister.

“But if both countries can cooperate and develop good-neighborly relations, it will create better conditions for negotiations on the Northern territories, who are with the Russian side, Prime Minister Abe and foreign Minister Kishida”, he added.

Earlier it was reported that the Japanese government is trying to convince their companies to invest in projects in Russia in order to provide a breakthrough in discussions on the settlement of the territorial dispute. However, Japanese companies are afraid of the unpredictability of investment prospects in Russia, the calculation of the risk-to-return projects here is very difficult, which could delay decision-making on investments.
