Iraqi Kurdistan has asked for Russian military and humanitarian assistance

The government of Iraqi Kurdistan appealed to Russia with a request to provide military and humanitarian assistance. About it in interview to the newspaper “Izvestia” said the head of international relations Department of the government of the Kurdish Autonomous region of Iraq, Falah Mustafa Bakir following the meeting with Deputy foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

The Department head also noted that it is necessary to provide humanitarian assistance to the refugees who came to Iraqi Kurdistan from other areas of the country, as well as from Syria. According to him, in Moscow stated that it “will examine the requests and will try to help.”

Battle for Mosul — the second largest city of Iraq, the stronghold and the unofficial capital of Iraqi territory controlled by ISIS, began on 17 October. It involves the Iraqi army units and Kurdish, with the support of the international coalition forces. In an official statement the military reported that as a result of the military operation, the militants suffered heavy losses.

Terrorist group “Islamic state” in the summer of 2014 captured large parts of Syria and Iraq and declared a Caliphate there. In Russia, IG is prohibited by a decision of the Supreme court.

Iraqi Kurdistan — Kurdish state formation in Iraq, according to the Constitution has the status of broad autonomy (somewhat similar to the position of member of the Confederation), the de facto semi-independent. The authorities in the region is the Democratic party of Kurdistan led by President Massoud Barzani.
