Masterpiece Rodchenko was put up for auction Sotheby’s for 2.5−3.5 million pounds
Rare painting “Design No. 95”, created in 1919, is stored in the same hands for 20 years, will be the main lot of the auction of Russian paintings in London on 29 November with an estimate (estimated value) 2,5 — 3,5 million pounds.
LONDON, 31 Dec — RIA Novosti. Irina Chumakov. A masterpiece of Russian avant-garde artist Alexander Rodchenko “Design No. 95” will be the top lot of the upcoming November 29 the Russian auction house Sotheby’s in London.
“Rare paintings, which were kept in the same hands for 20 years, will be the main lot of the auction of Russian paintings in London on 29 November with an estimate (estimated value) for 2.5 — 3.5 million pounds”, — told RIA Novosti in the auction house. It noted that the painting belongs to a private collector.
“The work was created in 1919, when Russia was the world leader of art of modernism. “Design No. 95″ is undoubtedly the most significant work of the artist, put up for auction since the legendary auction of Russian avant-garde and Soviet contemporary art that Sotheby’s held in Moscow in 1988,” notes the auction house.
Rodchenko, who worked in different techniques, became the founder of the movement of constructivism.
“After the revolution and upheaval of 1917, Russia enjoyed several years of incredible freedom of art, never before or thereafter, and resulting in creative growth, which spread out in all directions. “Design No. 95″ Rodchenko — the masterpiece of this period, it occupies a special place not only in the artist, but in the heritage of the Russian avant-garde art in General”, — said the head of Russian art auction Sotheby’s Reto Barmettler.
At the auction the auction will be exhibited 22 works from the same private collection.
Among the works of such major representatives of the Russian abstractionism as Kazimir Malevich, Varvara Stepanova, Ilya Chashnik, and Nikolai Suetin.
“An important event of the auction is extremely rare scenic abstraction known graphic designer Vladimir Stenberg. Collection that covers paintings and drawings, designs of furniture and fabric, is the embodiment of the spirit of change and revolution — one of the most exciting periods of Russian art”, — noted in Sotheby’s.
