Valentina Matvienko
The US initiative to host the UN peacekeepers on the Russian-Ukrainian border is illogical, the speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko. She announced this to journalists during his visit to Turkmenistan, “Interfax”.
“There is no logic in that sentence I don’t see,” she said.
According to Matvienko, the idea of placing blue helmets of the UN in the Donbas is to ensure the safety of OSCE mission members in control of the situation on the contact line of the parties. At the same time, she admits that if the observers will travel throughout the conflict, they will be accompanied by peacekeepers. “But if someone starts to dictate any other terms, they do not understand what is happening in the conflict zone”, — said the speaker of the Federation Council.
“Those who would like to surround residents of the breakaway republics of Donbass and Lugansk barbed wire or ring and just destroy these people, I think this idea from anyone will not work, will not work”, — has concluded Matvienko.
On the fact that peacekeeping forces in the zone of armed conflict in the Donbass should be placed, in particular, on the Russian-Ukrainian border, insists the U.S. Department of state. In Washington, the international force is considered as a “potential tool for the protection of Ukrainian citizens regardless of their ethnicity and nationality”.
On 5 September a resolution on the peacekeepers by order of the President of Russia in the UN Security Council has made Moscow. The proposal suggests placing the mission on the demarcation line between the militias of the unrecognized republics and Armed forces of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that the deployment of the peacekeeping mission in the Donbass must be consistent with the self-proclaimed militia Donetsk and Lugansk national republics. In response, the Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the “blue helmets” UN “nowhere and never are located without the consent of the parties.”
