The EU called for the release of the Deputy Chairman of the “Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people” Akhtem chigusa. This is stated in the statement on the website of the EU. “The European Union has consistently tracked the case of Mr. Chiygoza and insisted on his release and on this call we repeat today,” — said in a communiqué.
“The ban on the activities of Parliament and self-governing body and the persecution of its leaders constitute serious and unacceptable violations of their rights,” reads the statement.
In Brussels also expect the immediate withdrawal of charges against another Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis Ilmi Umerov. “Reaffirm our long-standing position that all illegally detained citizens of Ukraine on the Crimean Peninsula and the Russian Federation must be immediately released,” — said in a press release.
Monday, September 11, the Supreme court of the Republic of Crimea recognized the Chairman Chiygoza guilty of organizing the riots at the walls of the Crimean Parliament in February 2014, ahead of a referendum on reunification with Russia, and sentenced to eight years of imprisonment in a colony. Chiygoz was detained in January 2015.
Umarov is charged with committing public appeals and actions aimed at changing the territorial integrity of the state (part 2 of article 280.1 of the criminal code). According to investigators, in March Umerov, while in Ukraine, live TV channel ATR called for the violation of the territorial integrity of Russia.
