Fighter and leader
Political star Castro ascended to the sky after the uprising against the Pro-American capitalist regime of Fulgencio Batista, which began in July 1953. A bright young revolutionary with a pitch black beard and a cigar Fidel with his brother Raul and Ernesto Che Guevara became heroes of the left and progressive public in the world.
The Cuban revolution was supported by many Western intellectuals, including the American writer Ernest Hemingway, who many times visited in Havana.
“The rebellion against Batista’s is the first revolution in Cuba, which should really be considered a revolution,” said the writer in an interview.
At first, Castro was ready for constructive relations with the United States, but the Americans feared the growth of leftist sentiment in America and reacted to Castro’s hostile. Castro’s troops managed to thwart the U.S. at the Bay of Pigs in 1960, defended the conquests of the socialist revolution.
Castro said the U.S. no less hostility, though in his youth had for America sympathy and collected baseball cards with the popular American players.
New Cuban regime embraces the Soviet Union, which needed new allies around the world. Castro declared himself a Communist and, in 1963, came a triumphant visit to the Soviet Union. In Moscow, revolutionary, dressed in a sheepskin coat and fur hat, greeted by thousands of Muscovites, waving Cuban and Soviet flags.
The Cuban revolution and by Fidel, so not like the boring leaders of the Warsaw Pact, admired Soviet poets.

Rows were devoted to him, the poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, and the TV was broadcasting a popular song by Alexandra Pakhmutova: “Cuba, my love, Hear the measured tread? It’s going barbudos; the Sky over them like a fiery banner. Hear the measured tread?”.
Cuba closest to the United States government is an ally of the USSR, a flood of Soviet loans. Castro himself became the chief support of the Kremlin in Latin America. Cuba began a rapid pace to build socialism, which had all the inherent, dark Union traits: secret police, closed borders, absence of private property. However, Cuba under Castro’s leadership, and reached high level of development of education and medicine, as well as producing high quality medicines.
The main milestone of relations between Cuba and the Soviet Union was the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. Then the Soviet Union placed in Cuba for ballistic nuclear missiles, almost provoking a third world war.
After long and difficult negotiations between the USSR and USA missiles from Cuba were removed. Until 2000, Cuba was a Soviet electronic surveillance station.
The bandit and the sage
In 1990-e years, abandoned by their Soviet allies, Castro is left alone with a crumbling economy and huge debts. Cast adrift the Cuban economy survived only through tourism. In 2006, Fidel underwent intestinal surgery and during the surgery, temporarily handed power to brother Raul.
A comprehensive user manual Cuba Fidel never came back. In 2008 he retired, having conceded leadership of the country to his brother.

Replacing the olive shape for track suit, Castro retired, but continued to write articles about his vision of events in the world in the Cuban newspaper Granma.
He continued to have visitors with whom had a long philosophical conversation. In 2003, while still leader of the country he regularly met with U.S. Director Oliver stone who made a movie about him “Comandante”. The stone later said that he tried to change the “caricature” Castro in the eyes of Americans.
“For them it is a bearded Commie. But we have to look at him as one of the wisest men on earth as a man to which you want to seek advice,” said the Director.
However, not everyone mourned the death of Castro. In areas of the Cuban Diaspora in many U.S. cities was the occasion. Many Cubans who fled from the conquests of the socialist revolution Castro, went outside, sang and danced, chanting: “Cuba will be free!”.
Official Washington has not commented on the demise of Castro.
However, Alexander ROS-Lehtinen, the first American of Cuban descent, held in Congress, wrote on Twitter that Fidel was a “thug” and deemed his death a new opportunity for Cuba on the path to democracy and freedom.
Despite the romantic flair, Cuban socialism, even after the reforms of Raul Castro, still accompanied by a number of problems: from the persecution of the people of opposition views to the slow economic development and low income levels of the population. In September asking about regular oil supplies Havana appealed to Russia.
Current President Barack Obama has done a lot to bring closer the positions of the once-implacable foes: Washington and Havana. It not only simplified rules of registration of Cuban illegal immigrants, who fled from the socialist Cuban authorities, but he also paid a visit to the Island of freedom.
One of the scenes in the course of the visit clearly illustrated the current state of us-Cuban relations. After the next public event in Havana, Obama tried to put a hand on the shoulder of Raul Castro. Raul, despite the efforts to normalize relations with Washington, the hand Obama was intercepted and deliberately raised it above his head.
Cuba is about as wary of any hints that the U.S. and forces of “global capital” win the struggle of ideologies.
