Putin met with new UN Secretary General

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with the elected Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), antónio Guterres. This was reported on Thursday, November 24, on the website of the Kremlin.

During the conversation the Russian head of state reminded the new Secretary General, he was in constant touch with his predecessor, ban Ki-moon and expressed the hope that the same constructive dialogue will develop with him.

The President stressed that Russia “as one of the founding members of the UN has always advocated for the strengthening of its Central leading role in international Affairs, and an enhanced role in resolving conflicts in the struggle for human rights”.

Guterres, in turn, acknowledged the crucial role of Russia in the framework of the United Nations and “in all other aspects of international relations.” “I would like to say that a fundamental condition in order that I could be useful to the international community, lies in the fact that I was constructive, good dialogue relations with such a country as Russia”, — said the Secretary General.

António Guterres was appointed to the post of UN Secretary General in October, he will officially assume his duties from 1 January 2017. Guterres previously held the post of the UN high Commissioner for refugees.
