The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz believes that in Brussels it is necessary to discuss the possible use of sanctions against Ankara in connection with the arrests in Turkey of opposition politicians and journalists. Excerpt from his interview with the newspaper Bild am Sonntag quotes Sunday, November 13, RIA Novosti.
“By the end of this year must pass a reform of the Customs Union, a member of which is Turkey. I can’t imagine that after a wave of arrests of opposition MPs and journalists we will expand the Customs Union”, — said Schultz.
Also, the speaker of the European Parliament reiterated the EU position on the possible return to Turkey of the death penalty. If the leadership so decides, all negotiations with Ankara on the adoption of the European Union States completed.
November 5, Turkey arrested nine people, the oldest opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet, including chief editor Murat Sabuncu.
