BALI (Indonesia), 10 Nov — RIA Novosti, Mikhail Tsyganov. The head of the Russian delegation to the 85th General Assembly (GA) of the Interpol, the chief of National Central Bureau (NCB) of Interpol of Ministry of internal Affairs of Russia the General-the major of police Alexander Prokopchuk elected Vice-President of the organization, told RIA Novosti source in the Russian delegation.

The Assembly takes place on the Indonesian island of Bali.

“The citizen of the Russian Federation not only took the post of Vice-President from Europe for the first time since the country’s accession to Interpol more than a quarter century ago, but was elected 127 votes for and ten against, and eight abstentions,” said he.

The Interpol General Assembly have elected a new leadership of the organization successor Mireille Ballestrazzi, which occupied the position of President of Interpol since November 2012, was Deputy Minister of public security of China Meng Hongwei.

Earlier it was reported that during the last four days, more than 1.3 thousand representatives of 161 member countries of Interpol in Bali consider three main issues: combating terrorism, organized crime and cybercrime.

Addressing the participants of the voting, Prokopchuk expressed the hope that his more than thirty years experience of service in law enforcement will be sought after by Interpol. During this period he was engaged in the fight against economic and tax crimes, money laundering and legalization of criminal incomes which, according to him, is closely related to countering the financing of terrorism, cybercrime, counterfeiting and corruption.

In fact, Interpol’s new Vice-President took an active part in the activities of a number of working groups and the European Committee of this organization, and two years ago was elected a member of its Executive Committee. He participated in the process of internal consultations with representatives of countries-members of Interpol from all regions of the planet.

“In our constantly changing world where we face new global threats, I am fully aware how important it is for Interpol to continue to stay several steps ahead (of criminals), and intends to do everything in my power to help Interpol to achieve their full potential,” said Prokopchuk.

Interpol — the second after the United Nations according to the number of members of the international organization and the largest organization of law enforcement, which has 190 member States.

The USSR became a member of Interpol on 27 September 1990, 59 GA. Since 1991, the Ministry of internal Affairs of the USSR began to operate of Interpol. After the collapse of the USSR Central Bureau of Interpol of Russia became the legal successor of the Federal Bureau.
