Kurt Volker
The US special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker told Reuters about the prospects for the admission to Ukraine of American lethal weapons and military equipment.
He indicated that Washington is “actively considering” the issue and added that the weapons were necessary to the Ukrainian authorities solely for “self-protection”.
Walker has accused Russia of supporting the conflict in the Donbass, but noted that in Moscow “are beginning to realize that the current situation is contrary to Russian interests.”
Also, Volcker called “a good signal” leaders of liberation is banned in Russia organization “the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people” Akhtem chigusa and Ilmi Umerov. The representative of the state Department hopes that in the future Russia will take positive steps in resolving the conflict in Eastern Ukraine.
On Friday evening, Walker met with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. He expressed gratitude to Volker for “efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the Donbass”.
Earlier in the day, the special envoy of the state Department spoke with speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andrey Paruby. The speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament told the American that Kiev would impose sanctions against Russia’s energy sector.
