About 50 languages of the peoples of Russia are under threat of extinction

MOSCOW, October 3 — RIA Novosti. More than 135 national languages of Russia are in danger, according to UNESCO, 49 endangered, while the forced Russification is not happening, said the head of Federal Agency on Affairs of nationalities Igor Barinov.

On Tuesday in Moscow held a forum dialogue “Language policy: a nationwide examination”, organized by the Federal Agency for the Affairs of nationalities. Scientists-philologists, teachers of Russian language and languages of the world have gathered to develop proposals for the creation of optimal conditions for preservation and development of languages of peoples of Russia, organization of educational process for the formation of Russian civil identity taking into account the language situation in the Russian regions.

“Needs a caring attitude not only Russian language but all the languages of the peoples of Russia”, — said Barinov, speaking at the plenary session of the forum.

According to UNESCO, 136 languages of Russia are in danger. 22 of them in critical condition, 29 are severely endangered, 49 endangered.Igor Barinova Federal Agency for the Affairs of nationalities

He noted that experts have assessed the viability of languages on nine criteria, including the number of carriers.

“It should be noted that, despite an alarming report of UNESCO linguistic diversity of Russia continues to remain almost unchanged, and the extinction of languages or the forced Russification is not happening. We are probably the only country that from the entire list of multinational countries have not lost a single national language”, — added the head of the FADH.
