Hurricane “Maria” reached the Eastern part of Puerto Rico

TASS, September 20. Hurricane Maria formed in the Atlantic ocean, collapsed on Wednesday in the territory of Puerto Rico in the municipality of Yabucoa.

It is reported by the national center for monitoring hurricanes with headquarters in Miami (Florida).

The hurricane weakened to a category four out of a possible five on the Saffir-Simpson scale, at present, is 55 km South-East from the capital San Juan. The maximum wind speed within it is about 69 m/s. the Hurricane moved in a North-westerly direction at a speed of about 4 m/s.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic typically lasts six months — from 1 June to 30 November. Atmospheric phenomenon is classified as a storm and gets its own name, if the wind speed reaches its epicenter 17,4 m/c. At a wind speed of 33 m/s or more, the storm becomes a hurricane.
