“Irma” rained down on Havana heavy waves
HAVANA, September 10. /TASS/. The heavy waves caused by the passage of the devastating hurricane “Irma”, collapsed Saturday on the famous El malecón. Reports from Cuban television shows that currently eight-kilometer promenade and adjacent streets are closed to vehicles and absolutely deserted.
The eye of the hurricane didn’t come to Havana is closer than 200 km, but in the city of two million located on the Atlantic ocean, the whole day was squally and the wind was pretty strong rain. Many coastal areas were flooded.
In many parts of the city stopped the supply of electricity, telephone service is intermittent.

Residents and authorities of the Cuban capital a few days before the approaching “Irma” began to take serious precautions. Utilities staff cleared storm drains, cut off branches of trees, covered with sheets of plywood and glass buildings on the Malecon and strengthened the structure with sandbags. About 10 thousand people were evacuated from coastal areas to safe places.
The airport of Havana closed
As the correspondent of TASS in the representation of the Russian airline “Aeroflot” in Cuba, due to weather conditions the international airport of Havana josé martí will be closed until 12:00 on 11 September.
