The state Department has spoken out against a referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan

The US does not support a referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan. As reported RIA Novosti, said state Department spokesman Heather Nauert.

According to her, U.S. Secretary Rex Tillerson talked recently with representatives of both parties.

“We have expressed their deep concerns. We see this as a unilateral referendum,” she added, expressing doubt that any of the members of the international anti-terrorist coalition approved it.

Neuert also stressed that the United States “support a United democratic Iraq.”

In Iraqi Kurdistan, on 25 September held a referendum on independence. According to preliminary data, more than 93 percent of voters supported independence of the region.

Strongly opposed the holding of a plebiscite vote Baghdad, Ankara and Tehran. Western countries have called on the authorities of the Iraqi Kurdistan region not to hold a plebiscite. In the United States stated that “the holding of a referendum in the disputed areas is a particularly provocative and destabilizing”.

Iraqi Kurdistan is the unofficial name of the Kurdish Autonomous region in the North and North-East of Iraq, having the status of broad autonomy within the country’s legally enshrined in the Constitution. Included in this region’s province of Dahuk, Sulaymaniyah and Erbil are traditionally the place of residence of Kurds. The authorities in the region is the Kurdistan Democratic party led by Massoud Barzani.
