Ukraine submitted to the UN a draft on Crimea, Russia responded
MOSCOW, November 9 — RIA Novosti. Ukraine presented to the UN a draft resolution on human rights in Crimea, urging the Russian authorities to provide international observers access to the organization on the Peninsula, reports AFP. Russian Deputy Ambassador to the UN, called it an attempt to exert pressure on Moscow.
According to the Agency, the document condemns discrimination in Crimea, urges Russia to “take all necessary measures to immediately end all violations against the inhabitants of Crimea” and to cooperate with the UN office for human rights, which relies on the preparation of the report on the situation on the Peninsula. In addition, the document urges Russia to reconsider the decision to ban “the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people”, recognized in Russia as an extremist organization.
According to the Agency, the draft resolution was submitted by Ukraine with the support of 38 countries, including the US, UK and France. It is expected that the document will be put to the vote on Tuesday.
The vote is expected on Tuesday, reports AFP.
“The main goal of the resolution is to call upon the Russian Federation to ensure full compliance with its obligations as an occupying power under international law, and to ensure safe and unhindered access for the international framework for human rights in the temporarily occupied the Peninsula in order to monitor and report the situation in accordance with their mandate,” reads the statement of mission of Ukraine to the UN.
Deputy permanent representative of Russia to the UN Eugene Zagainov called Kiev presented a unilateral document and stated that it is not spelled out such steps of Kiev towards the Crimea as the termination of the trading blackout and the cessation of banking services. The Russian diplomat also accused Ukraine of “strengthen the information campaign against Russia in an attempt to exert pressure on our country,” the Agency added.
