Physicist Max Tegmark from the Massachusetts Institute of technology (USA) in an interview with IEEE Spectrum devoted to the recently published in his book “Life 3.0”, called the most likely negative scenario for the future of human civilization.
The greatest danger to the inhabitants of the Earth, says the scientist, is artificial superintelligence, not conscious. “When I talk about consciousness, I simply mean a subjective experience: it feels something like me,” said the scientist.
In his opinion, the study of artificial intelligence often ignores the problem of consciousness, in particular, the distinction between conscious and unconscious systems of information processing characteristic of living and nonliving nature.
Tegmark is against “carbon chauvinism”, accepting that life can be based and, in particular, silicon. The expert believes that intelligence and consciousness can be described by equations.
“If we educate children who continue to follow the dreams, which have not reached us, then we can be proud of them, even if we are already there. But if, instead, we will raise a new Adolf Hitler who will destroy everything that matters to us, we will not be so excited,” said the scientist.
Tegmark, shares the view of the American theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson, who admits that people in the future could seriously affect the Universe, the existence of which gives meaning to that person. Cosmologist disagree with the position of the Nobel laureate American physicist Steven Weinberg, the largest specialist in quantum field theory, which believes that “the more we understand the universe, the more and more pointless it seems to us”.
Tegmark encourage us to think about the future of humanity associated with artificial intelligence. “Just because we don’t know what goes wrong, does not mean that we don’t have to think about it” — said the scientist.
