Carter: the U.S. nuclear potential remains a top priority of the Pentagon

WASHINGTON, November 3. /Offset. TASS Andrey Shitov/. The nuclear deterrent remains the “cornerstone” of U.S. military strategy. This was stated by Minister of defense Ashton Carter, speaking at the ceremony of the change of the commander of the Strategic command of the armed forces of the United States. This post replaces General U.S. air force John Khayten, replacing Navy Admiral Cecil Haney.

“The American nuclear deterrent is the cornerstone of our security,” Carter said. “It remains a top priority of the Ministry of defence”, — he added.

Addressing the participants of the ceremony, which was held at the air base Offutt air force base (Nebraska), the Pentagon chief said, “You have to keep a large-scale nuclear attack on the United States and our allies. Help convince a potential enemy that he will not be able due to the escalation out of a failed aggressive surgery using conventional weapons. Convince our allies that our security guarantees, you can rely on. But if deterrence doesn’t work (although we hope it never comes to that), you give our President options to achieve the objectives of the US and our allies.”

Carter assured that he and all other leaders of the Pentagon will support these efforts “by the recapitalization of all three components of the nuclear triad”. “We are starting to make adjustments to the approach, in which nuclear deterrence has been underfunded for decades,” said the American Minister.

He explained that the decrease began after the end of the cold war. At the same time, according to Carter, other countries continued to increase their nuclear capabilities. Among them he called Russia, North Korea, China, Pakistan, India as well as — “for some time” — Iran. “So we have no more time to wait,” — said the Pentagon chief.

In recent years, and Carter, and other leaders of his Department are constantly warned about growing threats to US security and the need to increase allocations for military purposes. In the current speeches of the American Minister said in this context, not only on nuclear but also on the military space capabilities of the United States. Now they are interrelated and to separate them, the conviction of Carter, “it would be a mistake.”
