Russia’s Supreme court will review the case of “Kirovles” subject to the decision of the ECHR
MOSCOW, 16 Oct — RIA Novosti. The Presidium of the Russian Supreme court will review the case against opposition leader Alexei Navalny on charges of embezzlement of state enterprise “Kirovles”, told RIA Novosti press-service of the court.
“The Presidium of the Supreme court will consider the views of the head of the Supreme court on the resumption of the proceedings against Navalny in connection with the decision of the European court of human rights”, — said the Agency interlocutor.
In late February, the ECtHR ruled that political motive in the case of “Kirovles” no, but stated the violation of the rights of Navalny and Peter ofitserova (the second defendant) to a fair trial. The Strasbourg court ruled to recover their legal costs in 48 and 22 thousand euros and 8 thousand euros in compensation of damages.
The Ministry of justice attempted to appeal the decision of the ECHR, but the Grand chamber of the Strasbourg court refused to consider the appeal. While the Russian Ministry of justice declared that the judgment does not mean that the conviction of Navalny and Ofitserova in must be revised.
In 2013, Navalny and ex-head of “Vyatka forest company” Officers were sentenced to 5 and 4 years probation for embezzlement of property of “Kirovles”. Earlier in the same case were sentenced the former General Director of “Kirovles” Vyacheslav Opalev.
