The unbridled desire to publish recognized mental disorder
Dutch psychiatrists have discovered a new mental disorder. It manifests itself in the obsessive desire to publish your works and be quoted. Article scientists submitted to the journal PeerJ, and a Preprint is available on the newspaper’s website.
The authors relied on the results of the study, which was published a year ago in the journal PLOS ONE. In it, they analyzed questionnaires 535 Dutch biomedical and identified the personality traits that best correlate with the degree of scientific “uncleanliness”.
Then they found that often such behaviour was recognized as people with the characteristics that fall under the definition of narcissism. The narcissism and breaking the rules was more frequently found in people holding high positions and are not forced to constantly work on publications.
In this study psychiatrists noticed that there are several stable types of scientists each with characteristic features. After cluster analysis, the authors identified three types: the perfectionists (the perfectionists), “ideal-law” (the ideal sons-in-law) and “pompous little squirt” (sneaky grandiose). In the last group, and became Professor narcissism and high levels of scientific impropriety.
A small percentage of these “pompous rogues” susceptible to mental disorder, which the authors called Publiphilia Impactfactorius. It is characterized by “pathological concern to be published and to be cited”. According to scientists, this disorder is very contagious, as suffer from it easily pass it on to his students and younger colleagues.
