The Syrian army entered the city of Mayadin, one of the largest strongholds of the militants of the terrorist group “Islamic state” (IG, is prohibited in Russia), located 45 kilometers from Deir ez-Zor. On Friday, October 6, told the RIA Novosti news Agency, Brigadier General of the government army.
According to him, government forces took control of the market in the West of the city, the citadel of ar-Rahba and district Saami al-Halal. He noted that fierce fighting with militants continue in the South Medina.
The General added that the Syrian army provided humanitarian corridors to output civilians from the city. Moreover, the extremists continue to retain a portion of the population to use them as human shields.
The militants seized Mayadin in July 2013.
According to the Agency, the extremists in the city are receiving arms and ammunition from Iraq through the border town of Abukamal. From there, the fighters attack the Syrian army closer to Deir-ez-Zor and government troops on the highway Palmyra – Deir ez-Zor.
