The founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange said that in Catalonia, because of the planned referendum on secession of the region from Spain started the world’s first Internet war. About this he wrote on his Twitter page.
According to Assange, due to the fact that the people and government of the region using the network to organize a referendum on independence. In response to “the Spanish intelligence services attack, freeze telecommunications, occupied by the building operators, censorship of hundreds of sites, data transfer protocols”, he said.
He also noted that “what is happening in Catalonia is the largest in the West, the conflict between the people and the authorities since the fall of the Berlin wall.” Assange added that in 2017, using modern methods, from VPN, proxy, “mirrors” and encrypted chat to Internet surveillance, censorship in the network, as well as propaganda using bots.
The government of Catalonia plans to hold a referendum on independence on 1 October, but Madrid is trying to prevent this. Allowing a plebiscite law, the Parliament of Catalonia adopted on 6 September. Earlier, local authorities have developed a document according to which on independence will be announced immediately in the event of failure of the Central government to allow a referendum.
Catalonia — a region in the North-East of Spain, which seeks to secede from the Kingdom. The local Parliament on 9 November 2014, voted for sovereignty. The Declaration, which was supported by the majority of the deputies, set a period of eighteen months, during which the region should gain independence.
