What is happening with the weather? Our correspondent asked the Director of the hydrometeorological center of Russia Roman Vilfand.

Roman Vilfand: — Physical fundamentals of this situation are as follows: on the globe almost 65% of the territory occupied by oceans, and climate change over the oceans — especially the Equatorial and tropical regions is very small. Because the temperature inertia, it is in direct proportion to the temperature of the ocean water.
But in temperate latitudes where the predominant land — 50-I, 60-I Parallels — the changes are visible particularly strong. It continental position of our country and determines that climate change is most clearly noticeable here.
Another reason for this rapid warming is as follows: 62% of Russian territory is covered by permafrost. Under climate warming, due to anthropogenic (associated with human activities. — Ed.) the influence of permafrost thaws very quickly.
Simultaneously with this process released into the atmosphere large quantities of methane, itself a very effective greenhouse gas. The increase in the amount of methane provokes even more dramatic increase in air temperature.
Hence the alarming scientific assessments: in the Northern regions of European part of the country the rate of global warming 3 times more than in the whole globe.

— Clearly positive or, on the contrary, this negative phenomenon can not be named. On the one hand, the increase in air temperature for a country with such a harsh Northern climate, as we do, good, if you look at the situation from the point of view of energy security. Will be shorter than the heating season, with the times in more Northern latitudes you can grow heat-loving crops.
But there are obvious disadvantages. 62% of the country, where, as we mentioned, you’ll permafrost, the entire infrastructure — houses, gas and heat pipes, etc. — is designed with the inviolability of this permafrost.
Melting will lead to the destruction of all the buildings, permafrost turns into swamp. Moreover, thawing all the more will accelerate the process of global warming.
It is necessary to remember that warming does not increase in days with a comfortable temperature.
Alas, experts have long predicted (and reality proves it): climate warming increases the number of extreme weather events.
