Prime Minister of Japan believes that further dialogue with North Korea will lead to a dead end
NEW YORK, September 18. /TASS/. The dialogue with the DPRK, given the regular missile and nuclear tests, as well as past experience, can only lead to a dead end. This opinion was expressed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in his article published Sunday in the newspaper the New York Times.
“Everybody wants a peaceful solution to North Korean problems, and international unity is of paramount importance. However, prioritization in favor of diplomacy and underlining the importance of dialogue [with the DPRK] will not work. History shows that in this case it is imperative the pressure from the international community,” he said.
Abe recalled the withdrawal of the DPRK in the 1990-ies from the International atomic energy Agency and the Treaty on the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons. In addition, in his opinion, the six-party talks on the DPRK issue, involving China, Russia, USA, South Korea and Japan have not yielded the expected results.
“Given this and the continued rocket launches and nuclear tests, further dialogue with North Korea will lead to a dead end. Pyongyang would perceive negotiations as proof that other countries capitulated, seeing the success of its missile and nuclear programs. Now is the time to exert maximum pressure on the North, this should be no delay,” — said the Japanese Prime Minister.
