For the first time Fidel Castro visited the Soviet Union in the spring of 1963 at the invitation of the first Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Nikita Khrushchev. This visit was a conciliatory step, which followed the Cuban missile crisis. Then in order to avoid nuclear war with the United States, the Soviet leadership without consulting the Cubans have decided to take the missiles from the island having secured from Washington a guarantee of non-aggression to Cuba.
