The NATO leadership has decided to transfer planned for the beginning of 2017 summit of the Alliance. According to the magazine Der Spiegel, the event could be held later next summer.
According to the publication, the postponement of the summit was a victory of Republican Donald trump on the US presidential election on 8 November.
Prior to that, the Secretary General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg has been invited to the event being planned rival trump’s, of the democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, having in mind that she will become President.
The journal notes that the leadership of NATO needs time to the new us President decided on the strategy of the Alliance.
In particular, the cancellation of obligations trump’s presence in Eastern Europe of American troops on a rotational basis. Also new leadership in Washington to reduce American military forces in Europe.
In the best case, as writes the edition, the trump can only require that the share of expenditures of the European countries the activities of NATO has increased.
On Friday, 11 November, the press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that trump could strengthen an atmosphere of trust with Moscow, persuading NATO to slow the extension or to withdraw its troops from the borders of Russia.
Earlier, the Minister of defence of Germany Ursula von der Leyen called for trump not to deviate from the principles of NATO in the rigidity in relation to Russia. “Donald trump needs to say clearly whose side he’s on. On the side of justice, peace and democracy, or he doesn’t care, and he shows a gesture of male friendship,” — said the Minister. In addition, she pointed out that Trump should not perceive NATO as a business.
On 3 April, during the election campaign trump made the disintegration of NATO. He stated that the allies “do not pay their fair share” and called the Alliance of 28 countries obsolete. He said that if they don’t start to pay, then have to leave the organization. “And if NATO falls apart, then so be it,” summed up Republican.
Trump was elected President of the United States on 8 November, its inauguration will take place on 20 January 2017. In his speech on the occasion of the election, the politician promised to seek common ground, not hostility with partners in the world.
