Minister of education and science told the details of the return of astronomy in the schools

The course of astronomy will appear in the school curriculum in the first school day of the year and will be calculated on 35 hours. About it the newspaper “Izvestiya” told the Minister of education and science of Russia Olga Vasilyeva.

She noted that many experts state the redundancy of subjects in schools, and talks about the increase or decrease in the burden on the children cause a reaction in society. “But there is a subject that should not cause much controversy and doubt? is astronomy, which triumphantly returns to the school program.”

The Minister called a paradoxical situation, when first conquered outer space the country’s schools don’t have astronomy, but the Russian students for several years occupied the first places at the international Olympiads in astronomy.

12 December 2016 the Ministry proposed to make astronomy as a separate subject in high school. Later it became known that this course will take away time from the second foreign language.

Astronomy was removed from the curriculum in the early 1990-ies, however the core of the study within the courses of geography and physics. Supporters of this discipline as an example of its significance lead opinion polls by VTSIOM, according to which from 2007 to 2011, the share of Russians who believe that the Sun revolves around the Earth, and not Vice versa, has increased from 29 to 33 percent.
