The Russian foreign Ministry called the expansion of the EU sanctions unjustified step

The decision of the EU Council to expand sanctions against Russia, is deeply regrettable, said in comments of the Department of information and press of the Russian foreign Ministry.

The foreign Ministry stressed that Moscow views this step as unfriendly and unreasonable.

“It seems that the German colleagues have adopted the practice of broad interpretation of the sanctions restrictions, which directly contradicts international law and the principles of international relations as a whole”, — said the Minister.

Also the commentary notes that Russia “remains interested in development of economic cooperation” with Germany and the EU, despite the restrictions. However, as stated in the Ministry of foreign Affairs, Moscow reserves the right to retaliate.

On 4 August, the EU extended the restrictions against Russia because of the scandal around the German concern Siemens. Brussels added three Russians and three companies involved in the delivery of gas turbines in the Crimea, in the list of persons subject to restrictive measures.
