Russian “spies” in Bulgaria charged

The group, arrested in March this year, includes both retired and active military personnel, including a former high-ranking official of the Military Intelligence Service of Bulgaria. According to the investigation, he was the organizer of a group that collected secret and important information for Russian foreign intelligence. The documents were allegedly transferred to the embassy through his wife – she has Russian citizenship.

Among the suspects are also officials of the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense and a former military attaché. Two of those arrested are also charged with illegal possession of a firearm. When the group's arrest first became known, the Russian embassy demanded to “stop speculation” about the alleged intelligence activities of the Russian Federation.

Earlier in November, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, on the air of national television and radio, assessed the possibility of enmity with Russia. In his opinion, Moscow cannot be an enemy of Sofia, a dialogue with it is necessary.
