Details on EU sanctions against Belarus revealed

EC source: EU may impose sanctions on about 45 persons from Belarus

45 persons due to the refugee situation in Belarus. Details were disclosed to RIA Novosti by a source in the European Commission (EC).

According to the source, the list will include officials and those responsible for transporting migrants to the republic, and sanctions may affect a number of Belarusian banks and other financial organizations.

“The list will include about 45 individual officials of Belarus, their assets in the EU will be frozen, and they will not allow them to enter (countries of) the bloc, visas will be canceled, etc. These persons will be Belarusian officials, but also people responsible for the movement of immigrants to Belarus, “the source said.

The source also added that the EU is unlikely to impose sanctions against Aeroflot and Turkish Airlines. At the same time, sanctions are possible against airlines making charter flights from those regions “from which immigrants arrive.”

On the night of November 10, two large groups of migrants broke through the border of Belarus and Poland. This provoked a new round of the crisis, which has been going on since the spring of 2021. The countries of the European Union are confident that official Minsk bears responsibility for the crisis and threaten to impose new sanctions.

Air carriers are also blamed for what is happening at the border – for example, Russian Aeroflot, Belavia and Turkish Turkish Airways. In addition, Iraq has already been threatened with sanctions. In order to avoid them, official Baghdad has promised to take care of the return of those who wish to return to their homeland. Russia will help in this.
