Special envoy of the US state Department in Ukraine Kurt Volker said that Kiev should not attempt to regain nuclear weapons. He told about it on air of TV channel “Direct”.
He also added that the refusal of the Ukrainian leadership from nuclear weapons in 1994 was a right step.
“If Ukraine joined the countries that have renounced nuclear weapons, this would not be a good solution. I don’t think nuclear weapons would be something positive for Ukraine. I would not want to see Ukraine again revived the process,” said Walker.
In 1992, the Ukrainian authorities signed the so-called Lisbon Protocol on the recognition of the country non-nuclear. In 1994, Ukraine, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States signed the Budapest Memorandum, in which Kiev refused placed on the territory of Soviet nuclear weapons.
