The state Department criticized the ban, “Jehovah’s Witnesses” in Russia

The US state Department urged Russian authorities to overturn the Supreme court’s decision banning the activities of the organization “Jehovah’s Witnesses”* in Russia. This is stated in a statement.

“The decision of the Supreme court of Russia against “Jehovah’s Witnesses” is a manifestation of an alarming trend of persecution of religious minorities in Russia”, — said in a statement.

The Ministry also called on the Russian authorities to lift the ban on the activities of the organization in the country and “to reverse the process of closing the administrative centre “witnesses of iegovy”.

Before the appellate chamber of the Supreme court of Russia dismissed the appeal of the “Jehovah’s Witnesses” decision on the recognition of their extremist organization, liquidation and banning of the activities in the country.

In April, the Zamoskvoretsky court of Moscow upheld the order of the Ministry of justice to suspend the activities of “Jehovah’s Witnesses”.

On 21 April, the European external action service issued a statement in which he indicated that the followers of the organization must be able to “peacefully enjoy freedom of Assembly” in Russia.
