From July 1 this year come into force a law banning the sale of beer and other alcohol in plastic containers with a volume of over one and a half liters.

In June last year, the lower house of the Russian Parliament passed a law which restricted the manufacture and sale of alcohol in plastic containers larger than one and a half liters.

From 1 January this year began operating ban on the production and turnover of alcohol in plastic bottles of more than one and a half liters, except in cases of retail sales.

The penalties for the production and sale of alcohol in plastic packaging will be from three hundred to five hundred thousand rubles for legal entities, and from one hundred to two hundred thousand rubles for officials.

The law is called “On amendments to the law “On state regulation of production and turnover of ethyl alcohol, alcoholic and alcohol-containing products and about restriction of consumption (drinking) of alcoholic products” and the Code of the Russian Federation about administrative offences”.

Director for corporate relations Heineken brewery in Russia Cyril Bolmatov has previously commented on the bill as “a compromise that, though, and will cause the brewing industry, the damage still wouldn’t kill her”.

“Pressure aluminum lobby was long and hard, so despite the absurdity of all arguments in favor of limitation of PET containers, the law on this limitation still passed,” said Bolmatov.
