Lavrentiev: Russia faced “awkward attempts of blackmail” in Astana

At the intra-Syrian talks in Astana, the armed opposition Syria has demonstrated a “misguided attempt at blackmail”. This statement was made by the special representative of the President of Russia Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, noting that those wishing to derail the process in the Kazakh capital was “enough”. His words convey the Rambler/news citing RIA Novosti.

“We, of course, fixed by the Syrian armed opposition some attempts, awkward, shall we say, blackmail”, – said the Lavrentiev.

In addition, Lavrentyev said that it often happens that some preconditions from the opposition “simply impracticable”. In particular, the opposition demanded an end to completely fighting in Wadi Barada.

Also, the representative of the Russian side noticed that at the moment all efforts are made to ensure that the ceasefire in the Damascus suburbs was respected by both conflicting parties, however, to completely prevent provocations impossible.

The ceasefire was declared on 30 December of 2016 in all areas of the Arab Republic. Agreement on the ceasefire does not apply to a terrorist organization.

The talks in Astana between the Syrian government and representatives of the armed opposition took place on January 23-24. The meeting was initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia, Iran and Turkey in the negotiations agreed to establish a tripartite monitoring mechanism for the ceasefire.
