Polish politicians in their statements deliberately distort the history of the Second world war, the Chairman of the Duma Committee on international Affairs Leonid Slutsky. His words leads RIA Novosti on Thursday, August 31.
“This is a conscious distortion of historical truth to belittling or perhaps even eliminate the role of the Soviet people in the liberation of Europe from fascism. It’s a cynical, inhuman and ungrateful,” said Slutsky, commenting on the words of the Deputy Minister of culture of Poland Jaroslaw Sellin, who said that his country suffered the greatest casualties during the Second world war.
Earlier Thursday, Sellin said that Poland needs to remind the world that she is the biggest victim of war launched by Germany and the Soviet Union. “I include three million Polish Jews, as it were Polish citizens, as well as incredible material losses because this occupation lasted for six years”, — quotes its Agency. He also believes that the country is entitled to reparations from Germany.
On June 22, the Polish Sejm adopted amendments to the law on prohibition of propaganda of communism, which include, in particular, the demolition of Soviet monuments throughout the country. Exceptions are made, in particular, to memorials erected in places of burial. Slutsky criticized Polish politicians for Russophobia, noting that the document was adopted on the Day of memory and grief.
