Representatives of Russia, USA and Israel held secret talks, which touched on themes of the ceasefire in the South of Syria and determining areas of de-escalation on the borders of the UAR with Israel and Jordan. On Wednesday, August 9, the newspaper reported Haaretz.
The publication writes that the meeting took place in the Jordanian capital of Amman and in one of the European capitals. At the talks, Israel has opposed the agreement on zones of de-escalation in the country, pointing to the need to withdraw from Syria of Iranian soldiers.
Sources Haaretz reported that the Russian delegation at the talks was headed by special envoy of the President of Russia Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev. The U.S. was represented by special envoy on Syria, Deputy assistant Secretary of state Michael Ratna and the representative of the President of the United States in the coalition against terrorist group “Islamic state” (IG, is prohibited in Russia) Brett Mcguirk From the Israeli side the talks were attended by officials of the Ministry of foreign Affairs, defense Ministry, Mossad and the armed forces.
It is noted that the talks were held a few days before 7 July, when after a conversation of U.S. President Donald trump with Putin at the summit of “Big twenty” in Hamburg, it was announced that agreement has been reached on a ceasefire in the Syrian area of Dara’a and Quneitra.
Earlier, on may 4, countries-guarantors of a ceasefire in Syria — Russia, Turkey and Iran signed a Memorandum on creation of four security zones in Syria. They will act in Idlib province, in the territories of Latakia, Aleppo and Hama; in the North of HOMS province; in Eastern ghouta, on the South of Syria — the provinces of Deraa and Quneitra. There will be prohibited the use of weapons. It will also deliver humanitarian aid.
