The statement of the first President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev about the fact that the borders of the former Soviet Union may be a new state, is no more than populism. This opinion in an interview with “Tape.ru” was expressed by the Deputy of the state Duma from the CPRF Valery Rashkin on Tuesday, December 13.
“Don’t believe a word he said. Gorbachev is the absolute populist and provocateur. He plays on the feelings of the Russians, knowing the results of opinion polls and the mood of the citizens”, — said Rashkin.
According to the Deputy, Gorbachev really could have prevented the collapse of the Soviet Union, but did nothing. “It was everything: the army, the KGB, the police. And 80 percent of the citizens voted for the preservation of the Union”, — said the Communist.
The MP accepts that the idea of the revival of the “great powers” has a right to exist. “Even now, more than half of Russian citizens, especially young people who do not know what the Soviet Union is in favour of its restoration”, — said Rashkin.
Gorbachev suggested that the borders of the former Soviet Union may be a new Federal state, in an interview with TASS, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the collapse of the Soviet Union. “Old boundaries and with the same composition, voluntarily”, — said the politician. He added that he does not assume “responsibility” for the collapse of the country, but defended the Soviet Union “until the end”.
According to a study conducted by “Levada center” in November of this year, every second Russian (51%) believes that the collapse of the Soviet Union could have been avoided. More than half of citizens (56 percent) ‘m sorry about what happened.
8 December 1991 the leaders of the republics-founders of the USSR, Boris Yeltsin (Russia), Leonid Kravchuk (Ukraine) and Stanislav Shushkevich (Belarus) in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha and signed the Belavezha agreement, which declared the termination of activity of the Union and establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). 25 December of the same year Gorbachev announced resignation of the USSR President.
