Vitaly Churkin was born on 21 Feb 1952 in Moscow in the family of aviation engineer.
In 1974 he graduated from the Moscow state Institute of international relations (now MGIMO — University).
Candidate of historical Sciences. In 1980 at the Diplomatic Academy of the MFA of the USSR defended his thesis on “China and Japan in United States foreign policy, 1969-1980”.
In childhood he starred in small roles in three feature films, two of which were devoted to the biography of Vladimir Lenin (Ulyanov): “the Blue notebook” (1963; dir. Lev Kulidzhanov), “Zero three” (1964; dir. Igor El’tsov), “mother’s Heart” (1965; dir. Mark Donskoy).
From 1974 to 1979 worked as an assistant, senior assistant in the translation Department of the foreign Ministry of the USSR, was a translator in the negotiations on the limitation of strategic armaments OSV-2 in Geneva.
In 1979-1982 , third, second, first Secretary of the US Department of the MFA of the USSR.
In 1982-1987 — second, then first Secretary of the Soviet Embassy in the United States (Washington).
From 1987 to 1989 — assistant of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist party of the Soviet Union.
In 1989-1990 — the press-Secretary of Minister of foreign Affairs of the USSR Eduard Shevardnadze.
In 1990-1991 — head of the information Department of the foreign Ministry of the USSR, in 1991 — member of the Collegium of the USSR Ministry of foreign Affairs.
From 1991 to 1992 — head of the information Department of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the USSR, then the Russian foreign Ministry.
In 1992 — Ambassador extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in Chile.
From June 1992 to October 1994 — Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Andrey Kozyrev. He was the special representative of Russian President on the peace talks on Yugoslavia in particular, negotiated between the parties to the Bosnian conflict and the Western countries.
In 1994-1998 — Ambassador extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in Belgium and the representative of Russia in NATO.
From 26 August 1998 to June 5, 2003 — Ambassador extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in Canada.
In 2003-2006 — Ambassador-at-large Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, was Chairman of the Committee of senior officials of international intergovernmental organizations, the Arctic Council.
Since April 8, 2006 — permanent representative to the UN in new York, the representative of the Russian Federation in the UN Security Council.
Ambassador extraordinary and Plenipotentiary (1990).
Awarded the order of Honour (2009), “For merits before Fatherland” IV degree (2012). Marked by gratitude of the President of the Russian Federation (1994).
Vitaly Churkin is survived by his wife and two children. Wife Irina graduated from the Institute of foreign languages. Maurice Thorez, the education — French interpreter. Daughter Anastasia graduated from MGIMO MFA of Russia, correspondent of the Russian TV channel RT. Son Maxim graduated from MGIMO MFA of Russia.
