Died representative of Russia to the UN Vitaly Churkin
Permanent representative of Russia to the UN Vitaly Churkin has died in new York. About it reports the Russian foreign Ministry.
Churkin died the day before your 65th birthday.
“The Russian foreign Ministry with a deep regret informs that on 20 February, the day before your 65th birthday, in new York, died suddenly permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the UN V. I. Churkin”, — stated in the message Department.
Churkin passed away at the working post, said the press service of the foreign Ministry. The official cause of death was not disclosed. According to sources, the New York Post, the diplomat was admitted to the hospital with a heart attack.
In the headquarters of the UN honoured the memory of the diplomat a moment of silence. “Diplomats from around the world to Express to the families and friends of Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin deepest condolences”, — said in a statement on the organization’s website.

The official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova called Churkin “a great diplomat” and “extraordinary personality”. “We have lost the native person,” she said.
“All his life he devoted to the protection of the interests of Russia, was on the front lines and the most strenuous positions,” said first Deputy permanent representative of Russia to the UN, Peter Ilichev.
As told RBC a source in the Ministry of foreign Affairs, Il’ichev will exercise the functions of the permanent representative of Russia to the UN before the adoption in the Kremlin the decision on his successor.
“He would, as during the absence of Ambassador during travel, to act in his place at meetings of the security Council,” — said the source.
Churkin is a graduate of the University. In the diplomatic service since 1974. He was appointed permanent representative of Russia to the UN on 8 April 2006. He previously held the post of Ambassador for special assignments of the Russian foreign Ministry, was Ambassador to Canada and Belgium. From 1992 to 1994 Churkin was Deputy foreign Minister.
