“I well understand the desire of all countries to protect their citizens from a strain that we still do not fully understand. But I am also concerned that some Member States are introducing drastic, general measures that are not factual and ineffective and that will only exacerbate inequalities, ”Ghebreyesus said.

He recommended taking measures to reduce the risk of spreading infection in accordance with the International Health Regulations. The head of the WHO also thanked Botswana and South Africa for the timely announcement of the detection of a new strain.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for strengthening control over the spread of the omicron strain in order not to allow the world to “close” and again interrupt economic interaction .

A new strain of coronavirus, code B.1.1.529, was detected in South Africa on November 11. The first confirmed cases of infection were recorded on November 24. The strain was named with the Greek letter “omicron” and have already managed to recognize its danger at the WHO level.
