Uruguay's head coach fired after 15 years

Oscar Tabares has stepped down as head coach of the Uruguayan national team

Oscar Tabares has been fired from the post of head coach of the Uruguayan national football team. This was reported on the Twitter account of the Football Association of Uruguay.

The 74-year-old is leaving the team after 15 years with the national team. In 2016, he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Currently Tabares is unable to move independently.

Tabares has led the Uruguay national team twice. The first time was in 1988, and returned to this post in 2006. He led the team in three world championships, five America's Cups. In 2011, he led the Sky Blues to their first America's Cup win since 1995.

Leading the Uruguay national team from 1988-1990 and from 2006 to 2021, he played in 214 matches. This is the third ever record for national team mentors.
