The jury acquitted the American who shot the demonstrators

The jury delivered a verdict to Kyle Rittenhouse, who shot two people at the BLM rally

Rittenhouse (Kyle Rittenhouse). They considered that the young man was not guilty.

The Rittenhouse case became one of the most notorious in recent years in the United States. Society has practically split into two camps – those who consider Rittenhouse to be a mass murderer and vigilante, and those who are confident that he has not exceeded the limits of permissible self-defense.

The crux of the matter

In August 2020, Kyle Rittenhouse was 17 years old. In those days in Kenosha, Wisconsin, there were massive demonstrations of the Black Lives Matter movement, accompanied by pogroms. Rittenhouse, as a volunteer defending the property of citizens, shot two protesters with a semi-automatic rifle.

The prosecution insisted that Rittenhouse acted deliberately, while the defense argued that the young man was forced to open fire on the attackers. At the same time, almost every moment of the incident was captured on video.

While testifying in court, Rittenhouse burst into tears, recalling what happened to him on the evening of August 25, 2020.

The reason for the riots

In the summer of 2020, the United States was swept by a wave of protests. Peaceful demonstrations by supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, which began in May, were a reaction to the death of a black American, George Floyd, during his arrest by police. However, protests soon escalated into riots in many US cities. The small American city of Kenosha in southeastern Wisconsin is no exception in a string of acts of civil disobedience.

Police in the city on August 23 wounded African-American Jacob Blake, whose girlfriend herself called the police home after reporting an incident of domestic violence by Blake. During the arrest, Blake did not obey the demands of the police, and officer Rasten Sheski shot him several times in the back. Despite the fact that Blake survived, protests by supporters of the BLM movement began in Kenosha, which quickly escalated into arson, robbery and clashes with the police.

In response, the residents of Kenosha formed armed groups on August 25 to protect property from looters. They gathered in detachments and patrolled the territory of the city along with the police or were on duty at shops with weapons, calling themselves patriots. Rittenhouse joined one of these units. The 17-year-old came from neighboring Illinois in response to calls from townspeople to protect the city. The young man was trained in a program for local police cadets.

The night of the murder

On August 25, Rittenhouse was at one of the shops that had been hit by protesters on Sheridan Road the previous night. It was through her that the police drove the bulk of Black Lives Matter activists out of the city center. In addition to Rittenhouse, there were several other patrols on the way of the activists. Clashes broke out between the “patriots” and the protesters, people behaved aggressively and threw accusations at each other. Many filmed what was happening on smartphones, journalists worked on the spot. A few minutes before the incident, Rittenhouse even managed to give an interview.

At some point, one of the protesters, 36-year-old Joseph Rosenbaum, with a support group tried to take the rifle from Rittenhouse. As a result of the scuffle, the young man shot Rosenbaum four times, and he ended up on the ground. Rittenhouse tried to escape from the scene. The protesters began to chase him and shout to everyone that the running young man had just shot one of them. Moments later, a whole crowd was chasing after Rittenhouse. What happened was caught on video.

Several people attacked him from behind, and Rittenhouse, with weapons in his hands, found himself on the asphalt in the middle of the street. One of the pursuers, 26-year-old Anthony Huber, jumped up to him and hit him with a skateboard. In response, Rittenhouse shot him in the chest. Almost at the same second, he was attacked by 26-year-old Gage Grosskreutz, who was carrying a pistol. But even here Rittenhouse proved to be faster – with his last shot he wounded Grosskreutz in the arm.

After that, the protesters fled in different directions, and Rittenhouse got up, raised his hands up and walked towards the police cars. He was arrested the next day. Rosenbaum and Huber both died of their injuries.

Court of Contention

Rittenhouse was charged on six counts, including first-degree murder. The maximum term is life imprisonment. Rittenhouse's defense insisted that the young man did not exceed the limits of admissible self-defense.

The Kenosha County Court began hearing the case on November 1, 2021. The process was broadcast live by dozens of TV channels. During it, more than 20 witnesses were questioned in front of the jury, and many loud statements were made. One of them belongs to Judge Bruce Schroeder, who forbade calling those killed as a result of the shooting “victims”, preferring the word “looters” to him.

Among the witnesses were those who characterized the deceased Rosenbaum as “a hyperaggressive person.” And prosecutor Thomas Binger tried to make a connection between the incident and Rittenhouse's hobby for the computer game Call of Duty.
