Prisoners' salaries have risen sharply in Russia

The head of the Federal Penitentiary Service, Alexander Kalashnikov, spoke about the increase in prisoners' salaries by 11% in six months … Director of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) of Russia Alexander Kalashnikov spoke about this at the International Penitentiary Forum in Ryazan, RIA Novosti reports.

According to him, in 2020, the proportion of prisoners involved in labor increased by 10 percent , up to 57 percent. In the first half of the year it reached 63.4 percent, and they received 11 percent more. Kalashnikov did not specify what kind of growth he was talking about – in annual terms or for six months, and this is a nominal salary or real disposable income.

The head of the Federal Penitentiary Service also did not name the exact amount that a prisoner in Russia can count on. However, he noticed that most often those convicts are involved in labor, in respect of whom the victims have brought claims. They work, as a rule, on sorting and processing municipal waste.

Earlier it was reported that the prisoners are planned to be used at construction sites in the Arctic. The corresponding bill is being prepared by the Federal Penitentiary Service and the Ministry of Justice. It is supposed to be sent there voluntarily, and as an advantage they call the preferential calculation of the term of criminal punishment.

On the eve of November 17, the Russian Ecological Operator (REO) reported that the Federal Penitentiary Service will supply more than 17 thousand waste containers to 14 Russian regions. And in September, the Ryazan development company “Unity” offered to use the labor of prisoners in the construction of new houses.
