US calls Russia a country with “flagrant violation of religious freedom”

Secretary of State Blinken: Russia is among the countries with “flagrant violation of religious freedom”

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Russia is included among the countries that are characterized by “systematic and flagrant violation of religious freedom.” This is reported by RBC with reference to the State Department.

According to Blinken, Russia does not comply with the norms prescribed in the 1993 US Religious Freedoms Act. The State Department did not specify what specific norms are violated in Russia.

Myanmar, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are also blacklisted by the level of religious freedom. Blinken also had questions about Algeria, the Comoros, Cuba and Nicaragua.

In 2019, the US State Department condemned Moscow for sentencing six members of Jehovah's Witnesses. The department said that Russia must respect the rights of its citizens to freedom of religion and stop falsely accusing the members of the organization of extremism. We are talking about the verdict against six members of Jehovah's Witnesses in Saratov. They were found guilty under the article “Incitement to hatred or hostility, as well as humiliation of human dignity” and sentenced to serve sentences in a colony for terms ranging from 2 years to 3 years and 6 months.
