McCain: Mattis’s visit to Ukraine opens the opportunity to supply weapons

WASHINGTON, 24 Aug — RIA Novosti, Dmitry Zlatarev. The visit of U.S. Secretary of defense James Mattis on Ukraine opens in Washington the opportunity to start delivery Kyiv lethal weapons, said U.S. Senator John McCain.

“The visit of the Mattis gives US another opportunity to adjust policy in Ukraine and to provide assistance in terms of defensive lethal weapons”, — said the Senator. In his statement, he expressed confidence that Kiev “needs it to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

He noted that the supply of weapons will contribute to the stability and “are necessary to the world.”

The Senator also said that the US President Donald trump made the first “significant step” in containing Russia, introducing new sanctions against it.

Russia has repeatedly warned against plans arms deliveries to Ukraine, because this step will only lead to the escalation of the conflict in the Donbass. As repeatedly stated by the press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, the supply of weapons to Ukraine from the outside will not contribute to resolving the crisis in the Donbas and the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Against arms shipments to Ukraine voted most European politicians. Thus, the ex-foreign Minister of Germany, former Chairman of the OSCE, the President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier said earlier that the supply of weapons to Ukraine are very risky and counterproductive way out of the crisis.
